Linguistic Treatment Codes for Geographic Names Adopted for Use in French
A7 indicates a dual official name in English and in French.
Q1 indicates an alternate name.
FTE indicates a French-text equivalent.
These codes indicate how the geographic names appearing under the French heading should be
used in various applications, i.e., on maps, in prose text, or on road signs. The detailed principles governing the use of geographic names coded as Q1 and FTE can be found in the
Linguistic Treatment of French Geographic names in Ontario. For purposes of consistency, these principles have been expanded to include the use of geographic names coded as A7, and have been conveniently summarized below:
Specific principles applying to the use of geographic names in the case of maps, prose texts and road signs in Ontario:
- Names on maps
As a general rule, on Ontario government maps, only official
geographic names should be used, i.e., the name listed under the
Approved Name heading. For consistency, it is recommended that
names coded A7 be used in one of two ways:
- Dual official names, for which the recommended map form of the
name does not change in the two languages, use the name: Ottawa,Hamilton or Moosonee in either language on any map.
- Dual official names for which the recommended map form differs
in the two languages, use the name listed under the Approved Name heading for general Government of Ontario maps, e.g., Greater Sudbury/Grand Sudbury. For maps addressed to the Francophone community including
bilingual maps, use the name listed under the French heading, e.g., Grand Sudbury/Greater Sudbury.
More specific principles apply in the case of geographic
names coded Q1 or FTE. See details in the Linguistic Treatment of French Geographic names in Ontario.
- Names in prose texts
In Ontario government publications produced in French, use the geographic name listed under the French heading, regardless of the code.
- Names on road signs
In the 23 designated areas of the French Language Services
Act, only names listed under the Approved
Name heading and alternate names (coded Q1) approved by the Board may be
used on G.I-3 (Hamlets) and G. I-6 (Rivers or Lakes) highway signs. French-text equivalents (coded FTE) are not to be used.
