(updated: April 2007)
Produced by:
Office of the Coordinator for French Language Services
Ministry of the Attorney General and Ministry of Community Safety and
Correctional Services in cooperation with
Government Translation Service,
Ministry of Government Services
Until now, our Justice sector offered only
specialized lexicons. No general lexicon existed for the users. Therefore, the
French Language Services Section felt that this situation was to be addressed.
To meet this important need, the Justice Sector Lexicon was
created to serve the members of the Correspondence and Communications Branches,
the translators, the persons in designated positions and the general staff of
the Ministry of the Attorney General and the Ministry of Community Safety and
Correctional Services.
The Lexicon contains a list of approximately 3,000
English entries, compiled alphabetically, along with their French equivalents.
This useful linguistic tool includes terms, expressions, act titles and
vocabulary specific to our Justice sector. It also incorporates previously
published lexicons (Lexicon of the Ministry of the Solicitor General and
Lexicon of the Ministry of Correctional Services).
The new lexicon has three separate sections. The
first section includes general vocabulary used in the fields of correctional
services, court administration and police services including terminology
specific to the Ontario Provincial Police, Emergency Management Ontario and the
Office of the Fire Marshal. It also contains a series of terms extracted from
news releases recently published by both ministries. The second section
provides a listing of non-Ontario government official names including names of
programs or organizations specific to the Canadian or American government and
names of associations. The third section has a bilingual listing of titles for
Acts administered by our two Ministries.
The Lexicon was prepared by the Office of the
Coordinator of French Language Services in co-operation with the Government
Translation Service (GTS) of the Ministry of Government Services.
This publication would not have been possible
without the invaluable assistance of Moune Boulerie, Acting Manager at GTS,
Denis Perreault, Corporate Terminology Advisor at GTS and the support of all
the Terminology Unit of GTS (Nelida Chan, Christine Ahmed, Hagit Fry, Ilwad
Ahmed). We would like to mention also the invaluable support and help of
Pierrette Thibault, Manager of the Correspondence Unit and Senior
Editor-Writer, Mathieu Marcil, Valerie Hopper, Bilingual Client Services, Judy
Phillips and her colleagues of Communications.
Users are invited to address general comments or
inquiries to Dennis Ing, FLS Assistant Coordinator, at 416 326-4052; for
terminology matters, the Terminology Hotline at 416 327 2723.
·
Please keep
in mind that this Lexicon is limited to the general terminology to be used by
our Ministries and does not include official ministry names. If you need to
find the French equivalent for an official name or terminology specific to
other Ontario government ministries, we invite you to query the ONTERM site at
http://www.onterm.gov.on.ca/searchtempl.asp.
·
Note that
official Ontario government names refer to names of ministries and their
organizational units, names of agencies, boards, commissions as well as program
names and position titles. The ONTERM site, developed and maintained by the
Government Translation Service, contains over 23,000 official Ontario
government names in English and in French, and provides useful bilingual
reference lists (ministers, ministries, Web site terminology, government
acronyms, etc.) along with valuable resources such as the GeoNames Ontario
database, other lexicons and French style guides.
